Bess Miller was recently hired as general manager of Denver’s the Curtis—a Double Tree by Hilton.

1. What are you looking forward to the most in your new role as general manager of Denver’s the Curtis—a Double Tree by Hilton?

I am excited to be part of a hotel with such a unique personality and vibe. Every time you turn a corner, you find something that makes you laugh or smile. It takes you back to when it was all about having fun and nothing else much mattered.

2. How do you think past experiences have prepared you for this role?

I have been fortunate to have worked in Denver for some time and have experience with a variety of brands. With different expectations for each brand, it has allowed me to gain perspective and use that to help me be successful going forward.

3. How did you get into the industry?

I met one of the hospitality professors when I was attending Metro State, and he taught me a lot about the industry. I took one of his classes the following semester and subsequently he helped me get a job at a downtown Denver hotels. That experience helped me to realize that hospitality was the industry for me and I changed my major.

4. What are you hoping to achieve in your new role?

I hope to contribute to the ongoing success of the Curtis. I want to ensure that I keep the culture alive and well and continue to evolve the brand.

5. What do you enjoy most about the industry?

I love a challenge. In running a hotel, you always have a lot of balls in the air and there is never a dull moment. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

The soon-to-open Omni Frisco Hotel in Dallas has announced the names of its new director of operations, director of finance, director of sales and marketing, director of engineering, director of human resources and neighborhood services general manager.

The hotel will open in July 2017. All of the announced positions will report to Jeff Smith, hotel general manager.

 

As I write this, I am sitting in the Hilton Anchorage getting ready to head out for a day of tours and adventures with a group of about 30 event planners. About two weeks ago, I was in Vancouver, BC with a group of three other editors/writers doing the same thing in that city. Yeah. I know. I have a pretty fabulous job. And so, I wanted to give a shout out to the CVBs who plan these trips and help me get better acquainted to everything our region has to offer so that I can, in turn, introduce you to new places and things to do when you’re planning a meeting or event.

 

Barry Smith, president and CEO, has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Professional Convention Management Association Education Foundation yesterday at the 2017 Visionary Awards in Washington, D.C.

Smith is one of the first Canadians to ever receive this award, which is given to inspirational leaders for their contributions to the business events industry.
