McMenamins, a family-owned company known throughout the Pacific Northwest for transforming historic buildings into neighborhood gathering spots, has opened its newest venue this past October: the Anderson School, in Bothell, Washington. Located in the city’s downtown in what was once Bothell Junior High School, the venue is McMenamins’ first in the Seattle area. The 5-acre property features three restaurants, three bars and a 72-room hotel. Additional on-site attractions include a brewery, a movie theater, gardens and an indoor saltwater swimming pool.

The school’s former classrooms are now hotel rooms with private baths; the principal’s office is now a hotel bar; and the reception area, Tavern on the Square café, gift shop and one of the meeting rooms are located in the cafeteria building. In addition, the Anderson School Brewery and Woodshop pub are set within the school’s original woodworking shop and include a 10-barrel copper kettle system that produces seasonal and limited-edition small-batch ales, as well as McMenamins’ standard handcrafted brews: Hammerhead, Ruby and Terminator Stout. The Woodshop pub and game room features pool tables, pinball and shuffleboard, and offers traditional pub fare. The new Shed bar is at the heart of the property; it features a two-sided indoor-outdoor fireplace and is surrounded by a pathway created from salvaged bricks uncovered during excavation.

The venue features three multipurpose event spaces, which can accommodate groups of 10 to 700 guests. On-site catering is available.

In the early 1990s, Washington communities and activists had a vision of maintaining green wilderness and creating space where people could embrace the outdoors near urban cities like Seattle. “We’re all better and healthier when we’re connected to nature,” says Caroline Villanova, community and partnerships manager at Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.

Visit Seattle, in partnership with the King County government, will host “Cloudbreak: Seattle’s Revive Live Music Fest,” in support of Seattle’s music community.
