One hundred and fifty years ago, Russia sold the Alaskan Territory to the United States through the Treaty of Cession. Secretary of State William Seward saw the acquisition of the territory as part of Manifest Destiny—a belief that the United States was destined to expand across North America. Across the country, Americans had mixed feelings about the purchase, which was often called Seward’s Folly. The treaty was signed on March 30, 1867, and on Oct.
Celebrating its 90th anniversary this summer, Seattle’s Mayflower Park Hotel started life as the Bergonian Hotel on July 16, 1927, and has been in continuous operation ever since. The hotel was named after original owner Stephen Berg and his love of The Oregonian newspaper. In salute to its 90 years of service and with a nod to its past, Mayflower Park created The Bergonian cocktail. Raise a glass to honor an icon in Seattle’s hospitality history.

Dennis Galloway is from what he calls “the first Washington,” aka Washington, D.C. But after 9/11, he decided to change coasts. “You can’t live on red alert,” Galloway says. “Life’s too short.”
So he packed up and moved to Seattle, trying on many hospitality hats once he arrived, before landing at the Washington State Convention Center as its sales manager in 2012.
“I went from meeting management to an event manager to catering sales and ended up at the convention center,” he says.
Microsoft recently produced Solutions5, the seventh annual collaborative conference bringing together five premier food service associations: Association of Correctional Food Service Affiliation, Association for Healthcare Foodservice, Foodservice Consultants Society International, National Association of College Auxiliary Services and the Society for Hospitality & Foodservice Management.

Last year, Sister Cities International celebrated its 60th anniversary. The organization was founded as a result of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s People-to-People program. Eisenhower believed that cultural exchanges, youth programs, sharing arts and culture, and exchanging business ideas and research and development projects could foster bonds between people of different communities. Here in the Northwest, each of our major cities has a number of sister cities. Seattle, for example, has 21, while Portland, Oregon, has nine (and one friendship city).
