Alaska Celebrates its Start as a U.S. Territory

Image:

One hundred and fifty years ago, Russia sold the Alaskan Territory to the United States through the Treaty of Cession. Secretary of State William Seward saw the acquisition of the territory as part of Manifest Destiny—a belief that the United States was destined to expand across North America. Across the country, Americans had mixed feelings about the purchase, which was often called Seward’s Folly. The treaty was signed on March 30, 1867, and on Oct.

Signature Drink: The Bergonian

Celebrating its 90th anniversary this summer, Seattle’s Mayflower Park Hotel started life as the Bergonian Hotel on July 16, 1927, and has been in continuous operation ever since. The hotel was named after original owner Stephen Berg and his love of The Oregonian newspaper. In salute to its 90 years of service and with a nod to its past, Mayflower Park created The Bergonian cocktail. Raise a glass to honor an icon in Seattle’s hospitality history.

Meet Dennis Galloway, a Washingtonian in Washington

Image:

Dennis Galloway is from what he calls “the first Washington,” aka Washington, D.C. But after 9/11, he decided to change coasts. “You can’t live on red alert,” Galloway says. “Life’s too short.”

So he packed up and moved to Seattle, trying on many hospitality hats once he arrived, before landing at the Washington State Convention Center as its sales manager in 2012.

“I went from meeting management to an event manager to catering sales and ended up at the convention center,” he says.

Seattle’s Caribbean sandwich shop Paseo has been garnering national attention: Anthony Bourdain said it was a must-visit stop when in Seattle. Yelp named it the #3 restaurant in the United States. And the Food Channel awarded its Caribbean Roast sandwich the #2 sandwich in the country. And now, beginning this summer, you can enjoy its flavors at your next event thanks to its new catering offerings!

Sister Cities Celebrates Global Connections Through Special Events or Business Meetings

Image:

Last year, Sister Cities International celebrated its 60th anniversary. The organization was founded as a result of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s People-to-People program. Eisenhower believed that cultural exchanges, youth programs, sharing arts and culture, and exchanging business ideas and research and development projects could foster bonds between people of different communities. Here in the Northwest, each of our major cities has a number of sister cities. Seattle, for example, has 21, while Portland, Oregon, has nine (and one friendship city).

Celebrate Diversity by Making Your Next Event as Welcoming as Possible

Image:

How much time do you spend making sure your meeting is as inclusive as possible? Do you think about diversity when you’re forming your planning committee? Your list of speakers? The vendors you use? If not, diversity experts say you may be missing out.

Consciously and proactively embracing diversity—and not just in terms of race, but also gender, sexual orientation, religion or disability status—doesn’t just attract more attendees. It also makes for a richer, more enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone.
